About This Journey

Why am I going on this trip alone?
Why am I driving around the USA for a year or so?

I will probably find the real answers during my trip, but for now the following quotations express the reasons I tell myself.

“A good traveler has no fixed plans, and is not intent on arriving.”
- Lao Tzu

It is a dream of a lifetime to hop in a car and drive around with complete freedom.

“Don’t ask what the world needs. Ask what makes you come alive, and go do it. Because what the world needs is people who have come alive.”
- Howard Thurman

A huge part of my trip is to fulfill what was in my vision at the start of School On Wheels, but to do this in a more innovative way by encouraging others across the country to create their own ways of reaching out to homeless children and to encourage each other in doing so. This will be the one defined purpose in my blog. There are one point six million homeless children across America – a low estimate as all are not listed in the official counts.

As founder of School on Wheels I will always have a deep love and concern for everyone connected and dedicated to the homeless children in California. Our goal is to reach out to them all — whose numbers right now are 290,000. If you like what I am doing, and have the means, click here to donate to School on Wheels.

“A wise old owl sat on an oak; The more he saw the less he spoke; The less he spoke the more he heard; Why aren’t we like that wise old bird?”
- Anonymous

I have a long way to go to be a good listener to everyone. In one sense this is a “learning” journey for me.

“How old would you be if you didn’t know how old you are?”
- Satchel Paige

This sabbatical year is my last official year with School on Wheels. I will turn 75 years old during my trip. I have very much come to peace with myself that: I do things slower; I forget things faster; I need more quiet time; I ‘m ready to let go and just “be”. I also know that I still “have creative music” inside of me — and this journey is to start off with a clean slate and discover what I will do in the years to come. Not knowing what I am doing, is the very essence of this trip and very exciting.

“There’s nothing to writing. All you do is sit down at a typewriter and open a vein.”
~Walter Wellesley “Red” Smith

I plan to write an internal book on the beginnings of School on Wheels and a few essays, such as the intangible impact of volunteers, an equal playing field for our homeless children in the understanding of money, and on listening to the voice inside.
