“Any glimpse into the life of an animal quickens our own and makes it so much the larger and better in every way.”
- John Muir (21 April 1838 – 24 December 1914) A Scottish-born American naturalist, author, and early advocate of preservation of wilderness in the United States — one of the Co- Founders of the Sierra Club.
My brother had volunteered his services by giving Reiki to some of the animals. His contact with John Bergmann, General Manager, enabled us to spend some time with him. This is a man who is compassionate and has given his life to caring for the animals in the best ways possible. “Established in 1977, Popcorn Park Zoo is a sanctuary for abandoned, injured, ill, exploited, abused or elderly wildlife, exotic and farm animals, and birds.”
At the top of my list of favorites is “Princess” — an old camel who suffers from arthritis. My brother gave her a couple of Reiki treatments when he volunteered at Popcorn Zoo. A magnificent animal! Here are other animals I made friends with during the day:
On the news last night, we heard that homelessness has risen 30% in the United States since 2007 with the number of women and children increasing the most. A sign of a nation, as we say over and over again, is how it treats its children; and the same can be said on how it treats its animals, extending and including nature in all forms. In my each day it becomes more evident that this is not an either-or circumstance.
My day was truly wonderful and I am so glad to have met and learned from John and all the animals, large and small. My time at the zoo was fun, quite hot, and a very long day.
