“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.”
- Margaret Mead
The above site will give you a clear brief history of Maryknoll and its present day commitments. Mary Josephine Rogers was born in Roxbury, Massachusetts, on October 27, 1882:
Maryknoll was my first life experience right after graduating from High School in 1953 – the training was as tough as the Marines; the spirit was contagious, warm, outgoing; and at the age of 18, I was inundated each day with worldwide knowledge of countries, peoples and cultures. For myself, I was never sent overseas but rather was sent to inner cities throughout the USA. I made the right decision in leaving, but will always have gratitude to Maryknoll for the many lessons I learned.
I did not know what to expect returning for a visit. I am staying here for a week. Maryknoll is on top of a hill, which makes my computer connections a little shaky – meaning communications might be slow. But the sisters that I am visiting are definitely not shaky (much older) but not shaken from their dedication and commitment to others around the world. Some women have just returned from the Sudan, Bangladesh and Cambodia as well as other countries. Once again I have the opportunity to be inundated which is turning out to be a life changing experience. I am also using my time to walk miles around the acres of land here at the Maryknoll Sisters and across the way at the Maryknoll Fathers. — a great way to reflect, to exercise and to enjoy the beauty.

When I returned to the East Coast, I realized that my experience with Maryknoll was for eighteen years and I decided to highlight their continued dedication and sacrifice over the years – celebrating 100 years in 2011.
